Fox and deer perform
Their disappearing acts
In the fresh snow

Highway rumble drowned
By a wave of poplar leaves
Tossed by the wind

The chip of a bird
And the quick flit of its wing
Ear wakes in the dark

Step into the view
Touch the landscape with your feet
Bow as you enter

Cloudy skies filled
With wings and honking sounds
The geese are restless

On this day of rest
Mind travels to the forest
By morning habit

Deer seek the margins
Move silently through darkness
Danger known by scent

Bright moonlit world
Sparkling white underneath
The twinkling stars

Thick splattering snow
Caked on glowing leaves and limbs
Dripping from my chin

Runners lap the track
Pursuit of excellence
In the morning light
