The sun’s bright rising
Peonies and lilies bloom
The earth’s patient flow

Purring chickadees
And the songs of birds at play
Runner’s easy stride

Green grass canvas
Heavy legs carving sweat trails
And dodging sprinklers

Spruce scent ‘fore the rain
Toddler’s senses trained to spot
Birds, pups, and critters

The earth, like a sponge
Swallows the summer rain whole
All but the puddles

Turtle starts early
Feeding in the sun-bathed pond
Air drips with summer

This day
This blue and green morning
This very breath

Runners slow it down
Enjoying the brand new day
On old weary legs

Twenty-six miles
A test of strength and resolve
Ends in smiles

Feet chant the rhythm
To-mor-row to-mor-row
Race day is coming
